Maharashtra is a state located in South West India. The word Maharashtra comes from the words Maha meaning Great and Rashtra meaning Nation, thus rendering the name Maharashtra (Great Nation). It is the second most populous and third largest state by area in India. It is also the richest state in India, contributing to 15% of the country's industrial output and 13.2% of its GDP in year 2005-06.

Maharashtra is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, Gujarat and the Union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli to the northwest, Madhya Pradesh to the northeast, Chhattisgarh to the east, Karnataka to the south, Andhra Pradesh to the southeast, and Goa to the southwest. The state covers an area of 307,731 km2 (118,816 sq mi) or 9.84% of the total geographical area of India. Mumbai, the capital city of the state, is India's largest city and the financial capital of the nation. Marathi is the language of Maharashtra.

Mumbai : Mumbai is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It was formerly known as Bombay. It is the financial capital of the country. It is the most populous city in India, and the most populous city in the world, with a population of approximately 14 million.[1] Along with the neighboring urban areas, including the cities of Navi Mumbai and Thane, it is one of the most populous urban regions in the world. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbor. As of 2009, Mumbai was named an Alpha world city. Mumbai is also the richest city in India, and has the highest GDP of any city in South or Central Asia.

With a population of around 2,420,000; Nagpur UA is the 13th largest urban conglomeration in India, the 114th largest city [2] in world, and the 143rd largest urban area in world in terms of population. The city is the seat of annual winter session of Maharashtra state assembly "Vidhan Sabha". Nagpur is the major commercial and political center of the backward Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, and is famous throughout the country as "Orange City" for being a major trade center of oranges. The city derives political importance from being the headquarters for the Hindu nationalist organization RSS and an important location for the Dalit Buddhist movement.

 

Pune: Pune formerly called Poona, also known as Punya-Nagari,[citation needed] is the eighth largest city and seventh largest metropolis in India, the second largest in the state of Maharashtra, after Mumbai and the largest city in the Western Ghats. Once the center of power of the Maratha Empire, situated 560 meters above sea level on the Deccan plateau at the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers Pune is the administrative capital of Pune district.

Pune is known to have existed as a town since 937 AD. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire, lived in Pune as a young boy, and later oversaw significant growth and development of the town during his reign. In 1730, Pune became an important political centre as the seat of the Peshwa, the prime minister of the Chhatrapati of Satara. After the town was annexed to British India in 1817, it served as a cantonment town and as the "monsoon capital" of the Bombay Presidency until the independence of India.

 

Amravati: Amravati (also known as Amaravati, Amrawati or Amraoti and Umraoti) is a city in the state of Maharashtra, India & Seventh most populous metropolitan area in Maharashtra. It is also the administrative headquarters of the Amravati district. Among the historical landmarks in the city are the temples of Goddess Amba, Lord Shri Krishna and Shri Venkateshwara.
